Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Freemasonry and Zion Lodge No. 1
About Freemasonry
What is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is the world's oldest and largest fraternity. It is a society of men concerned with moral and spiritual values, self-improvement, and helping our community. Freemasons are taught its principles (moral lessons and self-knowledge) by a series of ritual dramas, which follow ancient forms and use stonemasons' customs and tools as allegorical guides.
Is Freemasonry a religion?
No. Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it a substitute for religion. It requires of its members a belief in a Supreme Being, but it advocates no sectarian faith or practice. Masonic ceremonies include prayers, but these are non-denominational and emphasize moral teachings.
What are the core values of Freemasonry?
The core values of Freemasonry are Brotherly Love, Relief (charity), and Truth. We believe in treating others with respect, helping those in need, and living with integrity and honesty in all our dealings.
Membership & Joining
Who can become a Freemason?
To become a Freemason, you must be a man of at least 18 years of age (in Michigan), believe in a Supreme Being, be of good moral character, and come of your own free will. You must be recommended by current Freemasons and be able to financially support yourself and your family.
How do I join Zion Lodge No. 1?
To join, you must first ask. Freemasons do not recruit members. If you're interested, visit our Join page or contact us directly. You'll need to fill out a petition, be interviewed by lodge members, and be voted on by the lodge. The entire process is designed to ensure you're making an informed decision.
What is the time commitment?
The time commitment varies based on your level of involvement. Regular lodge meetings are typically held once or twice a month. During your degree work (the process of becoming a Master Mason), you'll need to memorize certain parts and attend degree ceremonies. After that, involvement is flexible based on your interests and availability.
How much does it cost?
There is an initiation fee and annual dues. The exact amounts vary by lodge. Contact us for current fees. These fees help cover the costs of maintaining the lodge building, charitable activities, and ceremonial expenses. Freemasonry should never be a financial burden.

Common Concerns
Is Freemasonry secret?
Freemasonry is not a secret society, but a society with secrets. Our existence, meeting places, and members are all public knowledge. What we keep private are our methods of recognition (certain handshakes and passwords) and the details of our ritual ceremonies. These are meaningful to members precisely because they are not public.
Will Freemasonry interfere with my family or work?
No. Freemasonry teaches that your family and work come first. We encourage balance and never pressure members to prioritize Masonic activities over family obligations or career responsibilities.
Can I be a Freemason if I'm not religious?
You must have a belief in a Supreme Being to become a Freemason, but we welcome men of all faiths. We do not require adherence to any specific religion. Your personal faith is your own, and Freemasonry respects that.
